just like a fresh cut tree brought into your home for the holidays, legend has it around 675 a.d. that wynfryth boniface, from wessex, germany in the town of geismar was said to have cut down the sacred tree of thor replacing it with a fir tree.  this is said to have been the first christmas tree.  the word tannenbaum, is the word for "fir tree", and can be understood to be "christmas tree" although the literal meaning of "christmas tree" is encapsulated in the word "weihnachtsbaum."
