john mcLaughlin invented the modern canada dry version of ginger ale in 1907. by 1890, john mcLaughlin had started in the soda business by opening a carbonated water plant in Toronto. he sold his product to local drugstores that used the carbonated water to mix with fruit juices to create sodas to sell to customers. one of the most popular fruits was the north american cranberry. the cranberry is one of only three native fruits to north america (blueberries and grapes are the other two). The lenni-lenape indians of new jersey called the cranberry "ibimi" meaning 'bitter berry.' early european settlers named the berry 'craneberry' because the flowers looked like the head of a sand crane.
